Manhole covers （マンホールの蓋）

Soon after you come to Japan, you might find fancy manhole covers like the above picture. They are called "design manhole" in Japanese, and there are so many designed manhole covers all over Japan. I suppose that there are 2 to 5 kinds of designs of manhole covers in each town! Many of them are only iron colors, but some of them are colored. I don't know why Japanese people are into such a trivial thing ... Although, it's interesting.
日本に来たらすぐに、上の写真の写真のようなおしゃれなマンホールの蓋を目にするかもしれません。これらは日本語で「デザインマンホール」と呼ばれていて、装飾的なマンホールの蓋が日本中にたくさんあります。たぶんそれぞれの町に２から５種類のデザインがあります。多くは鉄色ですが、いくつかは着色されています。なぜ日本人はこういうささいなことに夢中になるのか分かりませんが……でも面白いです。
