My friend asked me what the differences are between 使う, 使用する and 利用する. I thought this was a good question, so I’m going to share my answer.

使う is common and casual.
使用する is formal and flat. It’s usually used in formal documents.
利用する is close to 使用する, but it sounds more creative or cleverer, and sounds like “a good use” . Therefore it has also the meanings like:

- Make the best use of something with creativity. Or use something for non-intended purpose.

- Take advantage of something or someone in bad meaning.

The below is the other example.
エレベーターを使った/使用した means just “I used the elevator.”
エレベーターを利用した is the same, but depending on the context, it means “I used the elevator instead of other ways”. For example, the sentence could have a nuance like “I used the elevator cleverly, as for many people used the stairs and got tired.”
I hope it will help you.
